Tlie lollouing lettoi has been received irom tlie .acting Poslmasfvi - General, relative to the thrice-weekly mail service to the south. ‘‘ln reference to your letter of the 13th. inst. asking that the thrice-week-ly until service to Harihari be ontintied dtiline, the winter months; J beg to inform you that this question was considered recently in response to a similar request by the Me.slland Chamber of Commerce. Owing to the expense entailed, however, it has keen decided not to take any action in that direction at present; but when the mail services in the South Island are being relet next year, an alternative' service to give Harihari a thricc-woe-kly mail all the year round will be advertised. The question of increasing the frequency will then be given full consideration.”

LA FONTAINE SWAMP HARIHARI. Mr Seddon. has had the following reply on the above matter: “In reply t> your letter of the 13th. inst. regarding the request of a deputation at Harihari that work he proceeded with on the La Fontaine Swamp, Harihari. I have to inform you that it is not proposed that the Delia) tment shall do any further drainage work on the Swamp. “ft is thought that the time has now arrived when tho area enn be sub-divided and offered for selection, either for dairying cr flax-growing. “1 have already been furnished with reports on the matter by my Departmental officers, l.iit I am now awaiting a comprehensive report- by the Agricultural Department as to whether the area should he open for flax-growing, or snh-d i vded and offered as dairy fa rms. “As soon as this report lias been furnished and considered, steps will be taken to offer the block for the purpose decided upon as being 'most suitable.” (Signed) —A.
