THIRD GRADE. Excelsior won from Rimu by de fault. , UNITED V. KANIERI.
Kanieri travelled to Greymouth on Saturday and were defeated by United by 21 to 14. A fast game resulted in which some interesting play was shown, [light showers of ratyi fell intermittently during the early stage of the contest, but the conditions were conducive to good play until the last 20 minutes, when the rain fell steadily and made the ground and likewise tho ball, somewhat greasy. Both sides made a good show at passing, but they played a little too open, at times and making it fairly easy for the team on the defensive to intercept and secure possession. Individual play was a feature of the game and honours were equally shared by both teams in that respect. J'or United tries were scored by Wurnes, M. Jamieson (2), Sherlock and Jenkins. Bell converted three tries. for Kanieii tries were scored by AVbilev, Hag,nr and McKenzie. E. Pfahlert converting ono and Tainui kicking a penalty goal.
EXCELSIORS V. MAGPIES. The aborts match was played on the Gladstone gn. ind and resulted in a win far F.xeels« ns by 20 to 8. Magpies were minus two ol their best players (Gibbons and McKay) but the scores are a fair indication of the meiiits bf ‘ijbe teams respectively. Hokitika had the advantage of the wind in the first half and rattled up 15 points to their opponents’ nil. On changing ends, Magpies livened up and with the wind in their lavour, kept the visitors busy. Nice passing rushes by Excelsiors were met by equally good tackling by tbe Magpies. Clark, by good following up, scored for tbe borne team, the kick going wide. Toward tbe end oi tbe game, llibbs scored for Magpies and Ferguson converted. Ogilvie was in bis usual good form and his steady handling was always to be relied upon. For Excelsiors tries were scored by Staines (3). Houston (2), and Gugich, one being converted by King. Freitas played his best game Ibis season and Dovaney also made a very good showing.
KARAMEA BEAT MURCHISON WESTPORT, June 25
The annual fixture between the Knraliiea and Murchison Sub-Unions of tbe Duller Rugby Union took place in Westport this afternoon in the presence of the largest gathering of .spectators of the season, the enthusiasm on the side line being reminiscent or that of Rugby’s liest days of the past.
Kara men won by nine points (two penalty goals by Coutts and a try bv Barry Simpson), to 3 points (a try by J. Beard).
Bnrrv-Simpson, in making bis try, bad tbe misfortune to sustain a broken leg.
