AGAIXST .NORTHUMBERLAND. (Australian Press Association & Sun. (Received this day at 10.15 a.in.) LONDON, June 22. The New Zealanders began a match against Northumberland at Newcastle to-day. The attendance was 3,000. Winning the toss, with a perfect wicket and weather, the visitors gave a most sparkling exhibition of hatting. Blunt opened with Dempster and this pair rattled on 62 for the first wicket in half an hour, the latter hitting one sixer and five fours in his 29. Associated with Page, Blunt saw 100 go up in an hour, but was twice missed at point and in the slips. After this he went on in his busiest style, reaching the century in 95 minutes. The partnership was responsible for 122 in 65 minutes. Page was eventually out to a brilliant catch by Machonachie in the slips. Lowry then joined Blunt and by lunch time the score was 2 for 213, which eloquently testified to the aggressiveness of the batsmen.

On resuming the most forceful display of the day was given, 154 more being piled on in an hour and a quarter. before Blunt was caught, when just on the threshold of his double century. He simply flogged the howling, hitting one six and thirty-three fours. His splendid innings lasted three hours and averaged over a run per minute. Lowry also played another aggressive innings and was stumped on the eve of another century. At the tea adjournment the score had reached 5 for 390. hut with the exception of Merritt, the tail end did not do much and the innings ei'osed at 476.

On going in Bruce hatted well for the County, but rain caused stumps to he drawn at 5.50.
