BUR WOOD MURDER
(By Telegraph—Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, June 20. The only fact brought to light today concerning the murder of Gwendoline Scarff at Bmrwood was that the scone of the murder was in full view of two of the telegraph linesmen who were working on poles nearby for the whole of Tuesday morning.
Tliis new fact, combined with the fact that the nearest neighbour heard no screams, is fairly conclusive evidence that the murder did not take place in the daylight. Owing to rigor mortis not having set in when the body was found, it was assumed that the girl had been done to death only an hour or two before.
The possibility is that the girl was left bv her assailant, not dead, but dying, and that her death occurred some time after the attack.
The police, j( is understood, are working on tliis theory. CHRISTCHURCH, June 21.
Re tho Bunvood murder, detectives are seeking a labourer who is known to have been a. friend of the girl and who has been missing since tho day of the tragedy. They are concentrating in the direction of learning the man’s whereabouts. He is of a short stocky build and is a foreigner.
