HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

The Board met on Thursday afternoon at the Town Hall. Present:— Hon H L. Alicliel (Chairman), Messrs J. A. Murdoch, T. W. Duff. T. W. Bruce and A. Clifton.

A quantity of formal business was dealt with. A deputation from the Hokitika School Committee, consisting of Mr.J. Conning and Air E. Partridge (Hectoi) waited on the Board, an apology for absence being made for the Chairman (Rev. J. TV. Hayward). The deputation asked the Board to make a grant for two scholarships for pupils of the secondary classes to be tenable only for country scholars ; also grants for the school library and for prizes for the year. The Chairman expressed bis pleasure at the interest the Committee wore taking in school matters and promised every consideration.

A lengthy discussion followed during which the Chairman pointed out that for the past 38 years the Board had distributed practically the whole of its income for the upkeep of the districthigh school. Under no circumstances could thev give more than the income of the .Board, which was about £2OO This year the- Board had granted a, considerable sum in the purchase of typewriters for the school, and were also continuing the subsidy towards the salary of the extra assistant in the high school. It was ultimately resolved that tlie Board grant two scholarships tenable for one year of £2O each, tor counti\ scholars to attend the district high svhool.

In connection with the application tor assistance tor the school library it was pointed out that, legal opinion obtained was against the power of the Board to grant and this request was refused.

In connection with the request for a grant, for prizes at the end of the year, it was resolved to defer consider-

ation to a later date. The deputation thanked the Board for the consideration given and withdrew.
