TROUBLE ON A STEAMER. AUCKLAND. June 15

Short of coal, the cargo steamer. Pipiriki. bound from New York to Sydney put into Auckland last evening. Her officers reported that the vessel had encountered stormy weather, both in the Atlantic, when on her way from Liverpool to New York, and in the Pacific. Included in the steamer's cargo are -IIKK) toils of railway iron for M -stern Australia, which was the can,sc id much trouble and anxiety on board When the vessel was crossing tbe Atlantic. A week out from I.ivcrpoo! tbe .steamer ran into stormy weather, and was subjected to a severe buffeting. On April oth. tbe -wind increased to hurricane force. At the height of the gale Hie violent rolling of the shin caused the iron rails in No. 1 hold to break adrift, and they were thrown about Mill, the lurching of the steamc,. Ihe shiii was at once hove 10. and the work of securing the rails bogiMi. All the (leek hands, under the direction of the officers toiled in ihe hold, it being realised that the lease rails were likely to cause serious damage, if mol seemed, and at the end of four hours the men’s efforts were successful. The damage was confined lo several twisted st:i nch ions.

At the annual meeting of ifte Milking Shorthorn Association the Chairman's report stated the advance made since the Inundation of the Society fourteen years ago is wonderful. Commercially the season was had. on account of beef and butterfat prices being low, nevertheless, tih-j breed maintained its position. The following officers were elected:— President, W. R. Brown (Werrron) ; Vice-Presidents, J. Bateman i Invercargill). J. AlcLcod (Auckland) ; Treasurer. B. 1), Duxfield (Hurotiu); Auditor, C. W. Armstrong (Hamilton).

Two youths. John Henry Gravston and John Simpsbn pleaded guilty at. tibe Police Court to vagrancy and tbo jilacing of an obstruction on the railway line at Otoko. The annual meeting yesterday of the Romney Marsh Rheepbreeders Association resolutioned requesting the Government to allocate money either from the Consolidated Fund or proceeds from the Howard Estate, which was left to the nation for educational purposes, to the Agricultural College Council, so that they might appoint lecturers to deal witli the growth ol wool, such lecturers to he available to address meetings ol farmers on the subject. The resolution followed comment h.v J. E. Hewitt (MangnmaireL President, that the Association offered the Scientific Research Council a subsidy of CIOO yearly for three years for wool resnrch, and in the education of farmers. What lie would have done at the present time, he said, is to educate 1 the farmer towards knowing what is good wool and what is hair. Manygeneral farmers don’t know what they are buying. AMENDMENTS TO APIARIES ACT WELLINGTON, June 15.

Amendments to the Apiaries Act v. ill he the subject of a Bill to be introduced in the House oi Representatives in the coining session by the Minister for Agriculture (the Hon Mr Hawken).

The Minister informed a deputation from the National Beekeepers’ Association yesterday that it was proposed

to increase the penalties for breaches of the regulations.

The Director of Horticulture (Air J. A. Campbell) said it was recommended that the maximum amount of penalty he increased from £5 t > £2,).

AYKSTPORT SUPREME COURT. AYESTPORT, June 17

The Supreme Court sittings wenheld to-day before Air Justice Adams. There were no criminal cases and white gloves were presented to his Honour, who congratulated the district on its freedom from crime. He also stated the whole AYest Coast showed a gratifying absence of crime.

A SUICIDE. PALMERSTON X.. June 17. The body of a young man. Huin George .Smith, aged 22 years, iwns found hanging in an outhouse in Ruahine Street this morning. Deceased left a note indicating his intention to commit suicide. Deceased lost liis wife seven weeks ago. It is believed that this preyed on his mind.

SHOW TAKINGS. PALMERSTON X., June 17. For the fourth day of the Winter Show, the weather is line but cloudy, after light rain. The gate takings are over £2OO a heads of last year.
