WIRELESS ON SHIPS. AUCKLAND, June 14

The question of the extension of wireless services to a smaller type of steamer than is now required by the regulations of the .Marine Department has been raised, and a possible amendment of the Regulations in that direction is under consideration. Mr G. C. Godfrey. Secretary of the Marine Department, was in Auckland to-day. and presided over a conference with representa! i os of the local shipping interests, lhe object- of which was to ascertain how far they were prepared to meet the Government in the matter. An understanding was eventually arrived at, and it was thought there was no objection on the part of the loca' shipping interests to the lowering of the standard of the vessels oil which wireless shall he required, from those with complements of 25 men. to ships with complements of Id men. On the examination question there was evidence oil the part of the Telegraph Department of a readiness to see that full allow nine is made in the tests for net vousness on the part of the candidates. Altogether there was a readiness on all sides to make emuessions. with a view to assuring a wireless service that should guarantee the best possible protection 1o the i m <■' ling public and the crews. After Mr Godfrey has similarly met the shipping people in Wellington, the Minister will proceed to make such ainendineiils of •he Regulations as seem to him desirable.

COMPENSATION RAID. HAMILTON, June I I

Arising out of an accident at Hamilton on March 12th. which resulted in •ho death of Alice Myra Morris, aged H). and the subsequent trial and acquittal of a lorry driver. Edward Miller Rouse, the deceased’s father. William Morris, sued George Jamieson, lorry owner, for C'soo compensation. The defendant paid £ Id!) 12s into Court, which the pFintiff accepted in full settlement of the claim.

When the ease of Donald David Wilson. veterinary surgeon, of Hamilton, versus Montague Manning. Rank Manager. of Hamilton, in an action for £f!00 for alleged slander, was called in the Hamilton Suprr Court to-day. counsel for the plaintiff asked leave t' w ithdraw the ease.

Defendant’s .solicitor opposed the withdrawal, as defendant, still denied slander. The plaintiff, therefore, consented to judgment., with costs amounting to C 2.4 2s.

AN ACQUITTAL. GISBORNE, .Tune If. At the Supreme Court, before M; Justice Ostler, a young Maori named Warihe Wailii. was charged with cattle stealing and with receiving cattle knowing them to ho dishonestly obtained. He was found not guilty and discharged.

DIVORCE GRANTED. AUCKLAND, June 11. A divorce was granted Lily M. Thomas against Stanley W. Thomas, on the ground of adultery. They were' married in 1015 in New South Wales. After coining to Auckland petitioner found out her husband was ini.sconducting himself with another woman. Respondent admitted that a child was horn to the woman referred to. He was the father of this child.

ARBITRATION COURT. WELLINGTON, June 12. The Arbitration Court to-day awarded £l2O with costs, and expenses £32 10s in the claim by a father in respect to a City Corporation employee at Wakefield Street Power Hon-o. who fell through a skylight at Cliri.-.:mas time while affixing.!! block and tackle, the ground of the claim being that deceased was the eldest of a family of five and contributed to the maintenance of his parents and the younger members. The plaintiff was Peter .Murray Robertson, a recent arrival from Australia.

MOTOR THIEF CAUGHT. AUCKLAND, June 15

A car owned hy J. Paul. Y.M.C’.A. secretary at the PAY. camp. Tamnki, was taken from the parking place Grafton road last night. Paul had been at a party and tnmo out in time to see the vehicle gliding away. With two friends lie gave chase. The car stopped at the bottom of a hill, the occupants going down in neutral and were unable to get it to go further. Two men jumped out and # tlie pursuers caught one hiding in the Domain undergrowth. Although the prisoner twice broke loose. Paul and his companions got him again, eventually pinning the joy-rider and immediately removing him to the police station.

WHAT WAS NECESSARY. WELLINGTON, June 15. Speaking at the Returned Soldiers’ Association Conference social last evening the Minister of Defence, said if the people of New Zealand would only face their present troubles with the same courage as the men of the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force laced theirs in the war, there would he no concern for the future. The Minister said the Department still is- taking a lively interest in the Returned Soldiers and any request from them would have the Cabinet’s sympathetic consideration. General Sir Andrew Russell referred to the reviving interest in the R.S.A. and lie thought in five years hence they would reach the peak of applications for war pensions, for as the men grow older their war disabilities would tell more upon them. Allien troops weio in danger, they closed up and faced difficulties and if the country is now facing difficulties, the people should stick"together and they would pull through. They all knew that the Prime Minister carried a pack in the front line, but lie now had a heavier one to carry.- They should trust their leaders and close up their ranks and think less about themselves, but think more about their women and children.

XATOIXAL DAIRY SHOW. PALMERSTON X., June 15. For the second day of the National Dairy Show the weather was again fine. The attendance yesterday was t cr\ good, the first day gate takings being considerably in excess of the first day last year. In the Apple Championship, open to the whole of the Dominion. F. Peters (Waipawn) secured first and second and A. J. Bale (Havelock North! third. The principal attraction to-day is the Rugby match, Te Ante versus the local High School.

CAR thief. AUCKLAND, June 15. Raymond Patrick Letton arrested last night after a struggle in Grafton Road for alleged theft of a motor-ear. was before the Court this morning. He proved to !>e a man who was before the Court yesterday on a charge of unlawful conversion of another ear. He was then remanded. He will reappear in Court next Monday to answer both charges.
