Tne weather was line in the morning for the first round of match play in the New South Wales amateur golf championship, but two heavy showers ( .f rain fell 'during the afternoon. Duncan and Apperly had a battle royal. The New Zealander went outin :l-3. and was two up. but took three putts on the tenth green, and from thence onward his putting was weak. Apperl.v won the tenth, eleventh ami sixteenth, Imt Duncan .squared the match at the seventeenth, only to lose the cigtheenth. In the afternoon Dun-
can won the first hut lost the third and fourth. He was two down at the ninth and though lie "'on the tenth. A pperly had the upper hand and won three and two.
Morton played against Thorn. Tie von the third, but Thorn squared the match at the fifth. Horten then von the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, and maintaining is form, he was five up at the conclusion of the morning round. In the afternoon lie' sparkled out in 38, and eventually von 9 up and eight. He meets Russel, of Victoria, to-morrow.
AVhitton played line golf against .Mac Faria lie and the 'New Zealander was seven down :iL the conclusion of the morning round and gave up the .match.
A feature of the play was the defeat of the present champion. Morrison, hr Stnrrock.
Results of the day’s play are: Whitton defeated Mac-Furlane (resigned); K. Harrison defeated Bettington 4 up and 3; Nigel Smith defeated Coonan 3 and 2; Apperlv defeated Duncan 3 and 2; Russell defeated Wines 0 and 5: Horton defeated Thorn 9 and 8; Sturrock defeated Morrison 3 and 1 ; Walter Smith defeated Murdoch 2 and 1.
