CROWN THE STRONGEST.
LONDON, June 11. At the Empire Service League dinner. Earl Haig said there was no better battalion commander in Franco than Air Churchill, who, if he had wanted it, would have been in his (Earl Haig’s) high position.
The Prince of Wales, rushing from Devonshire, presided at the dinner, and. proposing the toast of the delegates. described the League as the biggest British institution. PLUCKY SAILORS. LONDON, June 13
An epic of the Atlantic was enacted v lien three lives were lost. When the Anchor liner, California, was six hundred miles from England, a woman slipped overboard. Two sailors jumped over to rescue her, but the vessel was going at such a speed that they soon were far astern, and before a boat could be launched, they all were drowned.

PRINCE OF WALES. VISIT TO STATE QUARRY. LONDON, June 11. The Prince of Wales, at the end of four days’ busy stay in the West Country. visited the famous d’Edabole slate quarry at Okehampton. The Prince curled himself up in an open iron truck on a bed of straw and sackings, and was let down into the workings. 'The veteran who controlled the lowering blasts that nobody in his care has ever been injured in thirty-six years. It was not intended that the Prince should descend at more than five miles hourly, but he quickly shouted “Faster.” then “Faster still.” lie thoroughly enjoyed the rapid descent of five hundred feet.
The quarry lias a remarkable record. It had been working continuously for four hundred years till it stopped for one week in last year’s general strike. Slate-quarrying must he a very healthy occupation. The Prince chatted with eight retired employees whoso ages ranged from seventy to eightyseven. One began work at the age of nine, and had eight sons, seven of whom are working in the quarry.
HONOLULU CONFERENCE. LONDON, June 13. Rritain will he unofficially represented at Honolulu Conference on Pacific relations from loth to 29th July. The delegates will include Sir Frederick Whyte, Professor Webster, Lionel Curtis.
