Woolley and Mills opened slowly against the bowling of McGirr and Allcott, hut they knocked up 50 in as many minutes.
Blunt went on after lunch, and off his first hall he got Bellamy caught in the slips. Jupp sent the next one to the ropes, and was missed in the same over, after which lie hit Allcott for two fours. Prior to this Jupp had treated the bowlers with respect. Later lie put up a ball which enabled Allcott to bring off a well-judged running catch.
AYills did not give a chance during the 23-5 minutes he batted for 68 runs, which included eight fours. Tt is his highest score in first class cricket.
Tamms hit two sixers and seven fmn*s but was twice missed. However, lie fell to a remarkable one-handed catch bv Oliver on the leg boundary, where tbe fieldsman stumbled and fell, but retained bis bold of the ball.
Blunt and Mills put on JO for New Zealand’s first wicket. The former completed bis half-century (out of 81) then scored in seventy minutes.

Interviewed by the British United Dress at Paris, lie said:— ‘‘l wanted to he the first this year, hut 1 wish I had nailed till the water was warmer. 1 left Prague on Saturday and arrived at Calais on Tuesday. I went to bed at 7 o’clock on Wednesday evening, awakened at midnight, and started the swim, at three o'clock on Thursday morning. The waves were soon whipped up by a breeze, and [ at once struck a l"g. hurting niv stomach. I was most distressed when my companion, Dvorack. had to give up alter six hours. llowevr, T was getting stronger and the waves seemed to he getting smaller. llj s food consisted of powdered chocolate* anti three bananas. He landed at Dover at 1.-15 o’clock on Thursday afternoon, his time for the crossing being 1.03 hours, which beat Michel's record of eleven hours five minutes, in September ol last year.

-fjpacek may and may not have thought to emulate Lindbergh’s lone unexpected dash. Certainly Ins methods were unconventional. He did not use glasses, and the result was temporary blindness. He was only rubbed with two pounds of grease. He says: “I consider it useless. 1 keep warm b\- fast swimming."
