A well-known Buller resident, Hr William McTndoe. soar., died at the Buller Hospital, at the age of Ob' years. He had resided at Seddonvilb* for over 30 years, and was a native of Larnarkshire, Scotland. He leaves two daughters and one son.

The frosts experienced so far this season have not been hard and continuous at Wukntipu, that being in the mountainous country, but the level of the lake is gradually coining down and the records at Frankton, at the Shotover. and elsewhere are being carefully noted by the Kawarau Gold Mining Company, in the hope of an early hardening frost that will warrant a notification to claim-holders of the closing of the gates, states a Dunedin message.

The new hall at Matainui was used for a public entertainment for the first time on Monday night, when there was a large gathering of the Wataroa community present. The Jubilee Bellringers gave an enjoyable evening, which was brought to a close with a dance. The company will pay a return visit on Thursday night when a benefit will be given for the hall fund. The piles for Cameron’s Creek bridge were driven some time ago. and the remainder of the material being to hand. the bridge will now be completed as soon as possible. When the bridge is finished. in a short time. Granite Creek bridge near Ferguson’s will he put in hand and this bridge should he ready in advance of Dry Creek. When the estimates are through it is likely Pot-ter's-Creek bridge, near Wailio. will 1 <* the next, structure to bo taken in band.

The older residents ol Hokitika .-till remember the time when Major .Hildreth was a- h-ov in Hokitika. TtTter an absence of two decades the Major is speaking; in the Salvation Army Hall to-night on “42 years under the Army Flag.” After a long life of varied service and with a’ wufc experience of all classes of men the Major is retiring from active service. The last few years have been spent in charge of the Wellington Home f r homeless and destitute men. A very interesting recital is expected. A charge for admission will he made to cover the Major's travelling expenses. A repeat address will he given in the Woodstock Hall on Thursday night also at 7.30 o'clock.

Following upon the breakdown of the steering gear of the Marnroa when near Pcnoarrmv Head early last Thursday morning, that vessel was withdrawn from the ferry service, and the Manuka took up her running. The Manuka left Wellington on Saturday night, arriving at Lyttelton on Monday morning. Everyone on hoard ill? Manuka at Lytle’t m was busy polishing up hrasswork and tidying and dressing up the cabins. The gear was also being overhauled, while a small army of painters was employed pa Tiling the hull. Unlike the Wallin’*. Mara roa and Maori, the .Manuka has not yet been converted into an oil-burner. It is possible that the .Mararoa will be finally retired from service.

At a, meeting of the Hokitika Free Library Committee last evening there were present, Dr Teichelmami, Messrs 1). J. Evans, T. W. Duff, G. Hein/, (representing the Hokitika Borough) and .Messrs J. .Maloney, J. Niven and J. Morris (representing the subseribers). Air Evans was elected Chairman of the Committee, vice Air H. Ai. Coulson, retired from the Committee. It was resolved to record a vote of thanks on the minutes to Air Corns.m for his past valued services. The qtiestion of his re-appointment to the Committee will he considered on his return to Now Zealand. Accounts for the month were passed for payment. it "as reported a considerable number of hooks had been added to the library. A proposal regarding the purchase of the magazines was deferred for con sideration a month hence. It was stated there were now Do subscribers to the Library and an effort will be made to still further increase the number. Accounts to the amount of £33 were passed for payment.

The Grey “Argus’’ states; Among those who suffered considerable loss as the result of the activities of thieve: in Greymouth during the past month was Air L. A. Inkster, of Alarsdou Road, whose residence was broken ini* while the owner and his wife were away on a holiday. Details concerning the. robbery were not published at the time, it being deemed inadvisable in view of the somewhat alarming extent to which the thieves were operating in the district. Tt appears that the total value of the goods stolen amounted to £143, including a “movie picture” camera, valued at £4O, a now Remington portable type-writer £lB, Kodak camera £3 10s, gramophone records of a total approximate value of £2O and a clock valued at £lO. The booty also included numerous wedding presents of much intrinsic and personal value, also kitchen utensils, tools and a quantity of clothing. No burglaries having taken place in the town for some time past, the thieves have apparently transferred their unwelcome attention to another locality.
