AN ASHBURTON PROTEST
[BT TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. ASHBURTON, June <5. A largely attended publifT indignation meeting, convened by the Borough and the County Councils to-nigbt discussed the proposal to abolish the Ashburton Electorate. The meeting carried a series of resolutions, these ’being: as follows: “That this meeting of electors voices an emphatic protest against the proposal to abolish the Ashburton Electorate, on tlie grounds that it has been an electorate for 44 years, and that the district consists of the second largest county in New Zealand ai d flic Ashburton Borough, the total population being over 18,000. “That- in natural resources and production it is unsurpassed by any other district.
“That if the proposal became effective, tlie community of interest would lie destroyed.
‘That the facilities of communication could not lie surprised, the Railways and the network of roads fonn ing perfect- communication, and leading to the natural central town. Ashburton.
“That the topographical lea-arcs, ideal rivers, mountains and ocean form natural boundaries.
“That Ibis meeting of electors of tlie- Ashburton Electorate also protests against the proposal to abolish the name of Ashburton from the political map.
‘‘That, the largest portion o| tlie proposed new district, of Ellesmere is in Ashburton County, including the town of Ashburton, tlie total value of which is £6,867,(513, compared with £4.641.934 in the remainder of the area. And consequently it is considered by this meeting, that, in the event of the Commission deciding that it i- unable (o consider the proposed now boundaries. the new Ellesmere Electorate should be renamed Ashburton. ■■That the Borough Council County Council he recommended to take vigorous action against the proposal. by lodging the necessary objections and appointing a strong deputation to appear before the Commission in support of the objections; also with the request that- they reconsider the whole matter, with the object of tlie retention of the Ashburton Elector-
