WHEN 4 HIT THE SK\. LONDON, April 14. At a luncheon given in his honour at the Royal Automobile Club Yesterday, Major H. O. IL Segrnve, who beat the world’s motoring speed record on Daytona Beach, Florida. last month, described his experiences on that occasion

When he had finished, he said, he found that the brakes would not pull up the car. “I had been told," be said, “hat the car. if braked, would pull up in two miles. At the end of four miles I was travelling at 100 miles an hour, and n quarter of a mile ahead there were banks running down to the river. I bad to choose between the sea and the sand dunes, and I chose the sea.

“When I bit the sen—the water being at a. depth of about three foot—the car seemed to cushion. Then it was turned completely round and I drove back to the starting point. We examined the brakes afterwards and there were none. The aluminium shoe had melted and run owing to the terrific beat.”
