Total.f or 2 wickets 13 Bowl ling: —(lsherwood l for 10, Gilligan 1 for 27. With their first victory within reach the New Zealanders were on their toes all day. They bowled and iielded with th keenest zest and put in some ideal team work. Blunt and Merritt were the most dangerous of the bow Tors. Arthur Gilligan for a while threatened to defer the prospect of victory. He hit with tremendous dash sending one sixer into a- garden outside the ground, hut an innocent looking googly from Blunt cut his career short. Tho match was really won in the first few overs, when A. 11. Gilligan and Wcnsley were got cheaply by McGirr and Bernau. Blunt after beating Gilligan had a spell of deadly howling and with Merritt quickly disposed of the tail emlers. James’ wicket- keeping, which got rid of two men by stumping and catching. was great!v admired. On going in with only lorty-two to obtain U> win, Bernau and Allcott looked like hitting off the runs, without a loss till the former spooned up a hall to midoff. James followed only to he dismissed by a. dazzling catch in tho long field. Allcott then got the remaining runs required and New Zealand won hv eight wickets. The visitors first victory delighted all cricket lovers, who admire the genuine sporting spirit they have exhibited and the way they play tho game for the game’s sake.
