James and Ollivcr were very unlucky, both being run out through a misunderstanding with their partners. McGirr left at •109 and then Merritt and Bernau gave the bowlers a lot of trouble, not being parted till they bad added 53 in fortyfive minutes. The whole innings lasted just on six hours and the howling came in for some severe treatment, hut A. E. Gilligan did not bowl.
