Total for no wickets 11 Stumps were then drawn. .Merritt, whose bowling was the chief feature of the match, was mainly responsible for the early hatting failures in the Sussex team, the Christchurch howler taking in all six wickets for just over 13 runs apiece. His record was quite good having regard for the free scoring of Inter Sussex hntsmen, Arthur Gilligan in particular being aggressive, scoring his 80 in eighty minutes. His innings mended a six and ten fours.
The first three wickets fell quickly, but Parkes and Langridge made a stand before Hie luncheon adjournment and carried the total to 79 for three wickets. Parkes then being 19 and his partner 10. The pair continued to add runs alter lunch, and on their departure a useful partnership by Arthur Gilligan and Cox followed. Cox was dismissed just before the tea adjournment, when tin* score had mounted to 231 for seven wickets, Gilligan then
having 40 to his credit. The 300 mark was passed before lie was disposed or, and then Merritt lost no time in finishing off' the innings.
With the exception of .MeGirr and Merritt, the howlers did not trouble the Sussex batsmen seriously. Blunt had a day off. failing to take a wicket. The New Zealanders went in twenty minutes before the close of play lor the day, and scored eleven runs without the loss of a batsman.
