The treasury officials estimated Americans have consumed over 2oO.(K!fl gallons of intoxicating beverages since prohibition, a greater part of which is described as illegal, under the strict interpretation of the Volstead Act. Hut there are many instances of perfectly proper and legal uses. Sacramental wine consumption totalled over 21.000.000 gallons and ft is estimated home made wine is many times the greater amount. Thirty million gallons of whisky were released from bonded warehouses for medicinal use. Bootleg liquor consumption is very heavy and is estimated at several million gallons annually. Officials alleged the majority of smuggling emanates from Canada, from where about eleven million gallons of beer. ale. nun. gin and whisky are smuggled annually.
