At the Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union here to-day a motion of protest against the increase in the Bank rate on overdrafts was carried. Mr J. Bitchoner, AI. NAISROAA’ ESCAPES. AUCKLAND. May 25. As a result of an accident, during unloading operations on the steamer AVingatui. two men were injured and several had narrow escapes, through some heavy steel rails which were being hoisted from number two hatch slipping from a sling and crashing among the men below. Donald McDonald, aged 15. married had four ribs broken, and David Bai-t-bait, aged 56, single sustained severe wounds in the leg. The men were hoisted to the deck by a crane and sent to the Hospital, where they were reported to-night to be progressing satisfactorily.
S.S. RIA'KRIXA. DUNEDIN. May 25. It is understood that a syndicate lias been formed in Dunedin for the purpose of salvaging the Rivorina, which was recently wrecked in Bass Strait. .Air R. C. Miller, of Port Chalmers. who is well-known in connection with various salvaging operations, will proceed immediately to Sydney in connection with the proposed undertaking.
