Abraham AYally Mohammed Salaam n, who is described as an Indian Herb Atah, was to-day fined ten pounds on each of two charges of obtaining money by falsely representing himself to be a person capable of diagnosing and curing ailments, and as skilled in the treatment of diseases. On four other charges he was ordered to come up for sentence within twelve months.
The Magistrate (Mi McKean) said: “The only conclusion I can come to. after hearing the evidence, is that the defendant did, by his words and conduct, represent himself to be a person capable of diagnosing and curing ailments, and skilled in the treatment of diseases. That representation "as a mere pretence, and was false, I am satisfied, after hearing the defendant’s denial of the statements of the principal witnesses for the prosecution, that he had no real belief in the statements made to these witnesses as to the state of their health." In asking for leniency. Mr Schramm, who appeared for Salaman, pointed out that none of the 6000 persons treated by Salaman had come forward to say that they had been defrauded bv him., Salaman’x expenses had been heavy, and £3009 worth of his stock had been in the possession of the police for some time. Mr Schramm asked that the penalty should he limited. The Magistrate agreed to drier the question of the confiscation of Salatiian's stock. southland winter show. INVERCARGILL, May 24. The Southland Winter Show -was opened to-day by Sir Joseph Ward, M.P., in splendid weather, and before a record attendance. The entries numbered 3245. against 1749 last year, including the children’s sections. T 1 io open championship for cheese was won by Brown’s Dairy Company. The Eden Company was second, the A ronton a Company third, and O’.niini Company fourth. SEAMAN'S LITIGATION. WELLINGTON, May 24. Reserved judgment was given by Mr J. IT. Salmon. S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court in the case in which James Brennan, a seaman of Wellington claimed £IOO damages from Fintan Patrick Walsh, of Wellington, Felix Newfield, of Lyttelton, and the Wellington Federated Seamen’s Industrial Union of Workers. on the ground that threats had been used against his prospective employers to prevent him fr*m securing employment.
