WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL

WEDNESDAY, AIAY 25th

SPECIAL MEETING

The Council sat at 10.40. Present: .Messrs AV. Jeffries, (County Chairman), R. Chester in an, J. A., Murdoch, B. Ward, J. Donovan, W. 11. Chinn, IV. Scurle, 11. L. Morel and E. A. Wells. motion of SYMPATHY.

Before proceeding with the special business of the meeting, the Chairman referred to the death of the late Mr '\V. IT. Sandle, of Stafford, and moved a vote of sympathy with the relatives. The Chairman spoke of Mr Handle’s long residence in the district and his soryiees to the community. during which he had served as a member of the Council. Mr AVard seconded the motion speaking of the faithful services given by Mr Sandle to all classes of the community. Air Murdoch also spoke supporting the motion. The motion was carried, the members standing in silence. FIN A NOT AD AIA ITERS.

The Council went into Committee to deal with the Treasurer’s report for the past year.. It was resolved to discontinue the following payments for the year: —Subsidy to Literary Institutes, £25; Hokitika Cemetery Maintenance, £ls.

The question of continuing the telephone guarantee for Lake Kanieri was referred to the Treasurer. The Council reaffirmed the former resolution in respect to the Roadmen attend nig punctually and regularly to their duties, the Overseer to take prompt action in the event of any dereliction of duty. AYiLit regard to general economics, the Chairman stated a saving of about £2,500 could he made on the expenditure by various curtailments of outlay. Recommendations of the Treasurer were adopted where practicable. ANNEAL .MEETING. The Council met at noon. The Alines Department offered £ for £ up to £SO, for repairs to Whitcombe track.—-Received ; consideration deferred till July meeting. The Overseer recommended that as no gravel existed in the Council’s gravel reserve at Ixoitcrangi, this reserve he sold and a new area in the Borough reserve purchased.—Received and referred to Messrs Jeffries and Evans to arrange with the Borough Council. The Roadman’s report re damage to La Fontaine bridge was received. It was resolved that the Coimtv Solicitor take action in regard to the breach of regulations. From Kokatahi Winter Show Committee applying for use of lorry for carriage of exhibits on Show day.— Received and request granted.

The question of arranging for paddock accommodation for Roadman’s horse at llarihari was referred to Air Sea Ho to arrange.

The Chairman addressed the Council on matters that had been attended to during the year, congratulating members of the year’s finances in spite of great difficulties that had been met, the overdraft' being £3500 as against £3102 the previous year. The Chairman thanked the Council for their support during the year. He also thanked the Clerk, Air Evans, the Overseer, Air Millner, and the road staff generally for their good work during the year. ELECTION OF CTIATRAIAN. Mr Evans took the chair and invited nominations. Air Searlo proposed Air Murdoch. Seconded by Air H ells, supported by .Messrs Ward. Chcsterman, Donovan. Jeffries, Alorcl and Chinn and carried unanimously Air Murdoch took the chair and thanked members for the confidence placed in him by putting him hack in the chair for the fourth time. He would, to the best of his ability, carry out the trust imposed in him. He ventured to sav there was no other local body in Now Zealand in a hotter condition than this Council, lie was not- satisfied that this Council was getting its full share of revenue, and ho would do his best to remedy this. He. paid a tribute to the services rendered h.v Air Jeffries, the retiring Chairman. He again thanked membora for liis election. He moved a hearty vote of thanks to the retiring Chairman. Seconded Fv Air Chinn and carried. Air Jetfries congratulated the on his election. He would give every assistance to Air Murdoch and trusted if thev all pulled together the coming year would he a better one than the last. Mr Wnrd congratulated Mr Jeffries on the very firm manner in which he had carried out his duties during the year. The Southern riding had special reason to thank the Chairman for the assistance he had given the district during the year. The Chairman moved a hearty, vote of thanks to the County Clerk and staff generally. Seconded hv Air Jeffries and carried. GREY COUNTY JUBILEE. An invitation was received from the Grey County Council to the jubilee social (in May 2Gt.h. —Received and neceptod. WINTER- SHOW.
