NEW GOLD FIELD,
SYDNEY, May 17,
A report by wireless states that a new gold find has been made near Kinnear, three days’ journey from Salamoa, in New Guinea. It is stated the field could easily be worked, as there is plenty of native labour available in tbe district.
TIME PAYMENT SYSTEM. SYDNEY, Mav 17
Dealing with the high rate of Federal taxation at present and with the recurrent Federal surpluses over his own estimates, the Federal Treasurer (]>r Earl Page) said that development of the time-payment system in Australia is proceeding at an alarming rate, and it is resulting in the prospective wealth of the community being pledged for things,, a good many of them foreign, at a rate which could not lie forecasted. This has resulted in an ever-increasing importation of such luxuries as motor ears, musical instruments, and such like goods.

The Workers Industrial Union at Broken Hill carried a motion of censure against Mayor Dennis in connection with his loyal speech cabled on April 28th. Tbe Union decided to instruct delegates in the Industrial Council to demand the resignation of Dennis as Mayor.
A meeting of the Barrier District Assembliy of the Australian Labour Party also discussed the speech and decided that the Mayor bad been merelv indiscreet.
QUARRY FATALITY. MELBOURNE. May 18.
Two Italians were killed and another man, Greenwood, entomlied beneath a quantity of gravel as tbe result of the collapse of the wali of a quarry at Lindenow. A gang of eighty men are working feverishly in an endeavour to release Greenwood. It is stated the fall was due to the wall haring beep undermined.
NEWSPAPER STRIKE. PERTH, May 18. ' After protracted negotiations between the Newspaper Proprietors Association and the Printing Industry Employees Union, tbe Union refused an offer of increased wages, irfiproved conditions or reference of the matters in dispute to a private court or the Arbitration Court. West Australian newspaper employees declared a strike, after giving the owners half an hour to come to their terms. BUSH FIRES OUT. MELBOURNE, May 17. Heavy rain extinguished the bush fire, cabled to-dav. The damage is noK ns extensive as at first anticipated. A' change of wind averted the danger to Balnarring.
