SHANGHAI, May 12. • • Forty thousand Chiang Kai-Shek ' troops crossed Ynngtsze forty miles up the river from Nanking, for the purjiose of co-operating with General C.hentiaoyuen in attacking Pengpu northern communications. Cantonese reported they won a victory at Lu< liowfu. in Anhwei Province, hut are threatened by attacks in Kiangsu Province. Extremists are digging trenches and erecting fortifications. In expectation of the Northerners reported occupying of Tsungming Island, Yangtsze Island, dose' to Shanghai, several Northern warships have left Tsingtao for the south. News from Hankow is but it is comparatively certain—"flint Yangsen, tlie Wanhsien perpetrator, lias formed an alliance with Chiang Kai-Shek. French residents of Ichang are under orders to prepare for evacuation within a few hours in view of the situation, which is becoming worse.
