Ihaaka Whaanga, :t well-known Maori chief of Nuhaka and one of the best-known and highly respected chiefs on the East Coast, died yesterday morning, after a long illness. A big tangi is taking place. May 9. A series of earthquakes passed through this district on Saturday. late. The same night radio station I ZEE. received tin urgent S.O.S. call front White Island, stating the island was violently trembling and quaking, and twelve men were in imminent danger. The message asked for a launch to immediately go out and take the men oft. The trembling continued the whole week end. Launches were standing by ready for action, hut the tremors have now subsided. GAMING HOUSE FINE. AUCKLAND. May 9. William Thomas Osmond admitted using premises in Hobson St. as a common gaining house, and was fined £3O. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. PA H 1 ATI'A May, 9. Herbert Ingamolls. single aged <ls, was admitted to the public hospital suffering front a half-severed windpipe. He hud been employed at Alfredton. He was found with his throat cut front ear to ear. A razor was found at his side. ESCAPEE SF.NTFNt FI). CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. Patrick Joseph Cletnenger was (barged to-day with escaping from Papariin prison and sentenced to an extra eight months’ imprisonment on top ot the present two years’ reformative. A SUICIDE. DUNEDIN. May 9. Henry Temple, single, aged 21, was found dead this morning in Club rooms of the Tablet newspaper office. GAMING HOUSE CHARGES. GISBORNE, May 9. Arthur Owen was charged at the Police Court this morning with having used premises for a common gaming house. Cornelius Paterson was elturged with assisting him. The charges were laid in consequence of a police raid on Saturday on Owen’s premises, where he conducted business as a tobacconist and hairdresser. A remand til! next Monday was granted.
