TOTE TICKET. WELLINGTON, May 0. A female totalisatur employee was to-day lined £1 by Mr Riddell, S.M., for selling a tote ticket to :i youth of 19 years, the law stipulating only persons over 21 are entitled to purchase tickets. The Magistrate did not regard the offence its serious.
A SENSATIONAL KIND. DUNEDIN. May lb A sensational discovery was made in Neill’s Bond this morning which resulted in the arrest of a man, Arthur George Bennie, whom the police have wanted lor some time on many charges of stealing from seaside cribs. A youth who was cut to the lop flat of the bond saw smoke issuing Imm fhe rafters and discerned a form crouched there. The police were sent for and a man emerged in a disagreeable state, with bags round hi-, legs and a mouth’s growth ol board, one side of which was singed. About a month ago the skylight Wits found broken in the bond and the police found a coat and hoots on the roof but no sign of a man. U appears that Bennie had procured a ladder, climbed up the rafters and bidden himself, dragging the ladder up alter him and so nobody had rot inkling of how anyone could get there. When the skylight was mended Bennie found himself a prisoner in the bond. ITe lay hidden nil day. emerging :it night and rifling the bond oi champagne, bread, sardines, cheese, cigars and cigarettes. the debris of which was found in great quantities in his lair. Apparently in a dopy condition he had allowed a match to start a fire and got his face singed. Bennie, an astonishing figure, was taken to the police station.
INCOME TAN EVASION. WELLINGTON. May 0. Edward Reuben Benjamin Holden was to-day Tmed the maximum penalty of £lO9 on each of five charges of wilfully making false income tax returns for five years. To the 91st ol March. 192(5. the income returned was stated to he £3058 instead of £23,(538. and tax paid £33. when it should have hooit £2755. Mr Tudeltope. for the Crown, said the defendant bought out a partner in 1919 and front that time seemed deliberately to have set out evading paying income tax.
