Tlio death occurred :il Auckland on Saturday of Robert Whiteside, who in his <lny was one of the greatest I!usbv players Xew Zealand has produced. In 1888 Whiteside was first choice for Auchland against Stoddart’s British team, but was injured early in the jrame. The deceased was a member of the Ponsonby Club and Auckland representative from ISB2 to 1.888, dropping out of the frame when still tit the height of his powers. Me was a contemporary of Arneil, Lecky, 0 Connor. Aladigan. Ryan. Klliott. the Warbricks and other famous Aucklanders of the 'eighties Whiteside was a member of the Auckland team that went south in 1888 under the captaincy of the late T. Henderson and against both Canterbury and Otago he scored a winning trv for the Aucklanders. In 1886 he again got the winning try in the historic match played against Wellington at Potier's Paddock (now Alexandra Park. Epsom).
