The death of Air William Squire Hill, took place at the Grey Hospital on Wednesday. The late Air Hill, who

was 7b years of age. was a native of Lancashire. England. and had been resident in Brunner for 10 years. About a year ago lie entered the (Ireymouth Hospital. His wife pre-deceased him several years ago. lie is sun ived by live (laughters, Alcsdnmes Summer (Paroa), Sainsbury (Wuihi), Graham

(Auckland). Ward (Kelson). Kale (single) and one son Thomas (Austin lia).'

The L'nion Steam Ship Company’s I’.AI.S. Alakura, which arrived at Wellington on Tuesday morning from Sydney. came into violent collision with a large whale during her recent trip from Wellington t ) Sydney. On Tliursudy night the vessel was steaming along in smooth sea in Leant i ful Iv tine

weather when a pronounced concussion was felt throughout the ship. The officer on the watch looked for the

cause, and saw part of the carcase of a large whale iloatiug away astern. The men in the l'oc'sle felt the impact with the monster as though the Makura had hit a wharf a glancing blow. The ship was undamaged, but tbo whale, which bad evidently been asleep on the .surface was completely cut in half. This is the third occasion within the past few months that a passenger steamer crossing between Australia and Nov Zealand lias struck a whale.

The fortnightly meeting of Westland Lodge, No 89 1'.A.0.D. was held in the lodge room last evening when a fair attendance was presided over by A.R. Urn. H. Ferguson. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed, the outward correspondence read and approved, inward nil. Bards reported sick members were doing well, with the exception- of two. Sick pay to the amount of £8 10s 8d was passed for payment; accounts nil. One candidate was balloted for and proved successful. One member was proposed. A mock installation was then carried out under tbo direction of the A.I). and was well carried out by junior and intending officers. After further discussion it was decided to proceed with the card tournament as soon as possible. The meeting then closed in barmonv.
