Tim Municipal Elections throughout New Zealand on Wednesday should have a stimulating influence oil local body polites. There were many polls I all over the land, indicating what a much governed country the Dominion is. The growth of local government is really becoming abnormal and the need for some reform in respect thereto appears to he a matter of increasing necessity. However, that is a .subject for future reference in days to come. The polling generally this week was very heavy, indicating a genuine interest in furthering local affairs. In many centres no doubt local organisations. and particularly those of Labor bent, were very active in inducing people to vote. This was well demonstrated at Christchurch, where Labor was well organised and had a bumper, and not undeserved .success, for the Mayoral chair. ’Pile victory there, or elsewhere, by Labour is not to be begrudged. for it is a reminder that political victories, whether in local or general politics, come only from complete organisation. That phase was demonstrated also in Auckland where the sitting Mayor was re-elected, due to the extensive organisation working in his interests. Turning to local resitlls, five new members enter the Hokitika Borough Council. Boom had been made for three now members, so that two of the former members have been defeated. The Council has boon strengthened by the changes, and Dr Teiehelmanii is to he welcomed hack again to the Council, ns in former years he. did excellent work for the local body in regard to its linanee. Tt was a worthy compliment to the doctor to see. him at the head of the poll, a position earned by his many services for-and on behalf of the district. Mr Jeffries polled well, also, a tribute to his good work on local bodies in which lie has been very self-sacrificing. The other members elected polled very evenly, the next six returned being all in the four hundred division. Mr Armstrong is to bo welcomed as entirely new blood, and Mr Duff’s election was a wise choice, his knowledge o? local Government work being a useful asset. ’flip contest was carried through in excellent spirit, the candidates all maintaining the friendliest of feelings one to the other. Mr Breeze well deserved the honor of being top of the Hospital Board poll. Two new members join the Board, and both Mr Heinz and Air Duff will he useful members. Mr Ziegler is to Ik- complimented on the large vote he gained in the Harbor Board election, while Mr Wood polled well in his absence. Mr Heenan is a young man now to local body life on both the Board and the Council, but is active in sporting in. terests. Altogether the choice of tin people appears to he generally satisfactory, and it is for the chosen ones to justify the honors attained, and the confidence renosed.
