MAYOR ARCHER. CHRISTCHURCH. April 23. Speaking of It is future policy. .Mayor Archer said to-day that, though there was a Labour majority on the Council lie had no intention whatever of setting out on many kinds of municipal enterprise, though lie was determined the mill; supply of the city should he first class. There would he no large expenditure without consultation with the ratepayers. MR HOLLAND’S COMMENT. STRATFORD, April 28. Mr 11. E. Holland (Leader of the Labour Party) interviewed regarding the mayoral elections, said the general opinion had been that Rev. Archer could" not win in Christchurch in a straight-out contest. Rev. Archer’s immense majority was a tribute to the ability with which lie had filled the position of mayor, and his complete answer to the people, who were responsible for personal attacks against Rev. Archer. The excellent Labour vote at Wliangarei indicated a change in public opinion, which was taking place. He regretted Mr Bloodwnrth’s defeat at Auckland, because lie was undoubtedly the best member of the last Council. Mr Chapman’s defeat at Wellington was equally to he regretted, hut the very large vote was significant. At Wanganui, Mr Rogers had defeated a very strong opponent in Hone Gibbons, and the vote was a recognition of the services Mr Rogers had rendered to the community. He was sure Mr Rogers would make a capable mayor.
