HOKITIKA SPORTS.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Hokitika Athletic and Cycling Club were favored with a perfect day yesterday, after a night of heavy rain, for their athletic sports, cycling and axemen’s carnival on Cass Square. There was a very large attendance, including a good many from the north. Interest in the various events were well .sustained. The whippet racing was a special attraction and much interest was shown in the contests, in the race whippets versus men, the latter with do y.ods in 100 had too much of a handicap for the dogs to make up. The (hopping and -awing contests as usual caused much interest and there were some close finishes in the several events. The cycling races also were of interest, a former resident. .). Lindop. now of Westport, showing excellent form. The Municipal Band was present and played a number of selections, while there were various side shows to amuse.
