The Chief Justice delivered his rereserved judgment on the points of law in tho Wa-itara betting case, in which Ernest Johnston claimed £l4B from Denis George, arising from a betting tramfiction, in which fraud avas alleg- * ed. Two questions were involved-—the recoverability or otherwise, by plaintiff. under tbe Gaming Act, of moneylost and paid by cheque, and the recoverability, -or otherwise of money* - * from, a person Carrying on the business of a bookmaker.
Sir E. P. Skerrott ruled that in the first case money was recoverable, hut \U_r if the transaction was with a bookmak- m or the amount was not recoverable. A waterside worker, AYalter Hodgson, was last week charged in the Police Court with selling a document entitled “The Hath to Power,” which, it was r “ alleged, encouraged lawlessness and violence, contrary to the AYar Regulates Act. In his reserved judgment to-day, Mr AY. R, AlcKean. S.AL, bed thl'.t tho book encourages lawlesness, contrary to the Act, and that, as defendant sold the hook, he must he convicted. Air Morton Aldis, p candidate for a position on the Board of Trustees of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, has issued a writ against the Auckland Sun, claiming £330 damages for Alleged libel. AVESTPORT, Apri 13. Mi- J. H. Hark ness, the well-known retired schoolmaster, has been elected as Alavor unopposed. There are 14 nominations for the nine seats on the Borough Council, and there are five nominations for three seats on the Hospital Board.
