Noticing the peculiar antics nl a shag in l lie water, a. Stewart Island resident steered his launch close up tn the bird. As he drew near, the shag appeared to be struggling against .something which was holding it down in the water, and this on closer inspection proved to be a small octopus, which had one arm tightly round the bird's nock, and was trying to swim down to the bottom dragging the shag with it.

■‘There is nothing sentimental about me. I was for nine years in the Australian bush among bullock drivers, and I know soniet. b i tig about the treatment of animals, but | do say that the way defendant treated this donkey was simply disgraceful.’ declared a Methodist minister in giving evidence against a circus band. An extraordinary accident. which may have serious consequences for tno victim, the daughter of a well-known medical man. happened on Saturday morning on the lticcartoii Goad, says a. Christchurch paper. The doctor, who was motoring into the city, with his daughter, heard a crash, of which he took little notice until he heard his daughter crying. Looking round, lie discovered that the child’s face was streaming with blood from numerous cuts, and that glass splinters were in her eyes. A stone had struck the wind-shield, shattering it, and flinging the fragments into the child’s face. The doctor at once drove to the hospital, where the glass fragments were extracted, but owing to the swollen state of the child’s eyes lie was unable to determine whether the injury to them was likely to have serious cnnsequenccs.

Ambergrix hits coming ashore pretty regularly in tin* western bays of Stewart Island during the past six months, and several people have fount! it profitable to keep a close watch alter westerly gales. About a month ago Mr Adam A,damson picked up some very line t|iudity ambergris at Doughboy Hay. worth fully £13(1. This beach has proved to be so profitable to visit that Mr Adamson has taken tip the lease of some land there and is building a small hut. with the intention of spending a gootl deal of his time in that spot. lie has also had a light dinghy built to enable him to visit the nearby bays during fine weather. It is interesting to know that a petition will shortly lie presented to Parliament asking for the protection of the sperm whale in New Zealand waters. According to those interested the sperm whale is almost a. rarity now, and from Auckland to Stewart Island many people derive considerable profit from the ambergris, which the sperm whale alone sheds. The value of ambergris found in these parts alone during the past three years' is in the vicinity of four figures per year.

The Christchurch excursionists appear to have been delighted with their trip to Hokitika. Last night Mr Evans was communicated with by ’phone from Christchurch, when it was indicated another excursion to Hokitika. was on the tapis for April 30th. Mr Evans was asked also to supply all information for a two days’ excursion to include a run to Waiho Glacier—the excursionists leaving Christchurch early on Saturday morning, reaching Hokitika at mid-day, and then motoring to Waiho Gorge. Sunday forenoon would he spent on the ice. and the return journey commenced in the early afternoon, reaching Hokitika in time to depart at 6.30 for Christchurch. The question of motor and hotel accommodation enters largely into the matter, and if this can lie fixed satisfactorily the trip will doubtless eome off. For the stop over picnic the railway fa.re would probably he doubled. It is contemplated bringing a leading Christchurch hand and ether excursionists also to Hokitika, the hand to give a concert here on Saturday night. These friendly invasions indicate how cordial the feeling is in Christchurch towards Hokitika and district. A decision in regard to the foregoing propositions will 1c reached probably this week, the negotiations with the Railway Department now lx?ing well advanced.
