COMEDY OF THE CHAPLINS
!0 NEW YORK, Jan. ID. The matrimonial affairs of Charlie | e Chaplin have developed into a legal ;t comedy as brimful of incongruities -as j one of his own film productions. , s While the comedian lies in his „ hod of sickness in New York his wife li is staging at Los Angeles a succession (j of court scenes which his lawyer, Mr e I Gavin McNnb, .sarcastically describes as e “the Second Gold Rush.” j Yesterday Mrs Chaplin obtained from t the judge so many orders relating to t her husband’s property that Mr MoNab suggested an extra order directing the comedian “to get out of bed and t complete “The Circus.” the filming of _ which has been interrupted by his matin’monini infelicit'ies. NOTHING FOR DETECTIVES. • I Among other tilings Mrs Chnplin I | obtained an alimony order restrospect tire for two months for £BOO a month, an order for £S0() as part fee for her lawyers, and another £430 to pay for the bonds under which the receivers have taken over Air Chaplin’s property. She next sought and obtained an i order giving her the custody of the j two children, and another forbidding I the comedian to visit them. j She failed to secure an order for £l2O with which to pay her detectives. As the receivers have been unable to discover the combination locks of the comedian’s safes she also asked 'and obtained the authority of the court for them to open the safes as best they could. But to-day it appears ( that the safes contain only rubbish. , so that her 'attorneys are still rummaging in vain through a hypothetical fortune of £3.500.0110 for funds with which to satisfy the court’s orders., , INCOME TAX BITE. j Meanwhile, the Federal authorities have notified the attorneys that the Government’s income tax lien takes precedence over all others. The next scene in the painful come- j dv is set for Thursday, when Mrs n Chaplin’s attorneys are to petition the courts for authority,to secure all the necessary' funds from the treasuries of the various companies sponsored by the cdmedian. They base their petition T on the allegation that Air Chaplin is fi the sole stockholder in these companies. A
