TEST MATCH. NEW ZEALAND V. MELBOURNE. VISITORS PLAY TO DRAW. AND JUST SECURE IT. [BY TEBV'VttAI’H PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 22. The first Test Match, Melbourne Eleven versus New Zealand, was drawn. New Zealand’s remarkable hatting recovery of yesterday- was still carried on to-day-, and it is possible that it was the very magnitude of New Zealand’s score which allowed the Melbourne side to avert defeat. New Zealand’s last pair, Galiclian and Merritt, were still going well half an hour after lunch, each with a score over thirty, and when Dacre declared, with nine wickets down, when the Inigo total of 602 runs had been reached, at 2.40, the Melbourne men went to the wickets. New Zealand’s last pair, Galliclian Ransford and Onyons made a stand, and added runs smartly, without any thought of playing for a draw. When those were both out and also Sandford. with the score only 91, the remainder of the Melbourne side played for n draw, and the hatting was painfully slow. When stumps were drawn, seven Melbourne wickets had fallen for 148 runs. Had Dacre declared earlier, his howlers would have bad threequarters of an hour longer to try to get those other three wickets. NEW ZEALAND—First Innings.
