HOBART, March 14. There was a tragical accident a Tasman Island, the site of the lighthouse off Cape Pillar. Five men were erecting a crane on the cliffs for the purpose ol hoisting stores to the lighthouse on Friday afternoon, when the crane collapsed. William. GroonVbridgc was hurled one hundred feet clown the cliffs and killed. Jospeli Paterson struck the edge ol the cliff and bis foot caught in a wire, where lie hung suspended till rescued badly injured. Tliere was no means of communication with tbc mainland, except by carrier pigeons, which were sent out. but they were killed by hawks. Alter repeated attempts the doctor was landed but was unable to take off Paterson until the sen calmed on Sunday morning when he was lowered on a. stretcher over the cliffs, and be was taken to the hospital in a- critical condition. Tho Chief Justice of Wcstralia announced the refusal of Clarke’s claim for the thousand sterling reward in connection with the Kalgoorlie police murders over the gold stealing case.
