QUAKE DISASTER

Its location is 6.500 kilometres distant from the Observatory. Probably ” it occurred in Asia. / The agitation of the seismological instruments lasted for four hours. It attained the exceptional amplitude of SO centimetres. WAVE REACHES SYDNEY. SYDNEY, 'Alarcli 8. The first wave of the Japanese earthquake readied Riverview Observatory at 9.25 o’clock last night, and the waves continued at intervals for a period of three hours. A feature was the exceptional length of the waves. FIRE DISASTER FOLLOWS HONOLULU, March 7. Cables from Tokyo declare there was a tire at Osaka, following on the earthquake, which did widespread damage, but has now been brought under control. Tlie earthquake followed the basin of j the river Kioto. The railways wore crippled, and telegraph wires came down. Several towns were badly shaken. Part of the city of Kototi, with a population of thirty thousand, was a raging inferno owing to a fire after the quake. TOKIO, Alarcli 7. Seven girls wore killed when a spinning mill dormitory at Osaka collapsed in the quake Thirty more were injured. TOTvTO CINEMA DISASTER. TOKIO, March 7. A cinema hall collapsed as the result of the earthquake. Eighty people were pinned under the wreckage. Rescue work is proceeding. QUAKE DISASTER. THOUSANDS KILLED. I Received this day at S a.m.l TOKIO. Alarcli 8. The first direct reports of the stricken region state there is terrible suffering. Thousands of homeless spent the. night, ill the fields among the snowin view of the burning towns and villages. Kyoto prefecture of police officially reports 1230 are dead and 1000 injured. Five towns and several villages were wholly destroyed, the fire •taking what the earthquake left. The town of Alinaya suffered worst. A thousand are dead and COO injured, while 890 buildings collapsed during • the two terrific shocks. The official report at Osaka gives the dead there at 40 and injured 67, mostly in Sakae suburb. Tidal waves followed the quake and six passengers in the world cruiser California were seriously hurt. One woman was drowned and a member of the crew who leaped front the deck to her rescue was hurt. Tokyo and Yokohama were prac-tic-allv unaffected.
