The Caucus turned down Mr Lang’s suggested increase of the basic wage which he proposed to force through the Assembly to-morrow, and decided to refer it back to the industrial commissioner and let him fix a new basic wage. It is understood the opposition of the Caucus also resulted in Mr Lang abandoning his intention to impose a fax on newspaper advertisements in place of the halfpenny tax on newspapers recently declared unconstitutional. SAILING FOR DOMINION. SYDNEY, March 8. Heron (Lloyds chief surveyor in Australasia) sails for New Zealand on Thursday in connection with repairs to the steamer Northumberland.
N.S.W. POLITICS. SYDNEY, March 8. The Legislative'Council considered a message from the Assembly regarding amendments to the Liquor Bill. It was decided by 33 votes to 12 that the Council should not insist upon ils amendments. The Labour Caucus instructed the Industrial Commissioner to make his basic wage on the basis of a husband, wife and two children. The proposal to include a third child was deleated. and it is generally believed the new pate will be about £-1 10s weekly. A tax on incomes over £1,250 sterling which was originally meant to assist the financing of the Child Endowment Scheme will now be used in place of the newspaper tax.
