Being damages for alleged libel contained in an article stating that Hannan was unlit to hold a Justice of the Peace Commission. In view of other recorded convictions and other conduct, Hannan did not give evidence. The jury found there was no libel, the verdict being for tHo defendant. Costs and disbursements were allowed i against Hannan. FISHERMAN'S PAY. THAMES. Manli 2. r ! lie fishing dispute lias reached a deadlock. A meeting of fishermen last evening resolved to adhere to the decision not to accept less than twopence a pound. It is stated that this amount is procurable at Auckland. Some boats intend lisliing and taking the catches direct to the city. At present lish is unprocurable in town, the hospital having to send to Auckland for supplus. If no settlement is reached by the < if-.l of the week, ihc companies Will pay off the hands, meaning about fifty men will be out of employment. J he fishermen number about 200. TWO FIRES. Ihe building and machinery and contents were valued at 21300. Tho building was insured for CO!Hi. A three-storey brick and concrete building in Tory Street, was damaged by fire. It was owned by T. G. Ricketts who carried on a printing business and bad insurances of 22300. The other occupant was Cowan and Son, envelope manufacturers, whose stock mi (lVred some damage, and was insured for C-T.OOO. The building was insured for 21300. IDLE AND DISORDERLY. WELLINGTON. March 3. Found in Chinese premises in Taranaki Street in the early hours of the morning. FIRE AT FREEZING WORKS. NEW PLYMOUTH. March 3. Shortly before live this morning a lire was discovered in liorthwii kb< freezing works. Waitarn and the position was so threatening that the man-
ager telephoned for the New Plymouth Eire Brigade, which quickly responded, but found on arrival, that Waitara Brigade had the lire well under control. The fire apparently originated in men’s clothes in the drying room, through steam pipes igniting tlie tiin- !•(']*. The beef cooling room was gutted in a! ve>,tenlay\s kiil spoilt but the slaughtermen are still working to-day and operations "ill not he seriously hindered. Waitara Brigade made r. wonderful save and tlie damage probably will not exceed a lew hundred. Insurances are unavailable.

Obituary—Albert Bruce, one time Town Clerk and treasurer of Thames. He was horn at Sydney in ISIS and came to Thames in 1837. He was manager of Wniotahi Gold Coy.. ,iud acted as secretary of the ThamesCoroniandel Board. ’l'hames Harbour Board. Sell no I of Mines Council, and took all active port in the formation of Hie South Auckland Racing Club and Thames Jockey Club. For the last three years he had been in failing health and last year resigned from business.
