Al live o'clock last evening a van <d a train being shunted into the platloi'in of the railway station crashed into a stop block and came to rest with one end through the .station roof, which was damaged for some distance and numerous advertising hoardings were torn down. In from ot the van was the old Ministerial car at present being used by the Premier. 'lbis was slightly damaged. Mr Coates had left for Rotorua earlier.
CATTLE STEALING.' NAPIER. Feb. 25.
At the Supreme Court. Judge Ostler lined Marlin Paget, a Putorino farmer, £SO, on tt. charge of stealing three head of cattle, the proporlv of George Percy Coates, a neighbouring farmer. The jury inspected the cattle alleged to be stolen and returned a verdict that accused was guilty of stealing one cow and recommended tlie accused to mercy, liis Honour said lie gave consideration to the rider and also the fact of accused's previonslv honourable record. Six months was allowed to pay. IXOUKST VERDICT. NAPIER. Felt. 25. At an inquest held yesterday afternoon. Air Dyer (Coroner) returned a verdict of accidental death of James Poller, an intitule of the Old People's Heme. Parke Maud, who suecumlied .subsequent to drinking liniment in mistake for cough mixture. The Coroner remarked that it was inadvisable to allow old people to take medicine as tliev pleased. There should he arrangements by which the old people were supervised when taking medicine.
WOOL SALES. WANGANUI. Feb. 25
At last night's wool sale, the upward trend of prices was still evident, though not in u conspicuous degree. Ordinary coarse crossbreds showed a rise of no to one penny per pound over the first sale in November and line wools were as much a.s Lid more. A feature of the stile was the brisk demand for lamb's wool, necks and bellies. Some of the latter were purchased by Continental buyers at fleer.' prices. Fine Southdown and h.ultItred lots were not abundant, hut won goad prices. Bradford and Continent operated freely at. fixed limits and there was no lagging in the bidding. Germany was operating freely, hut America was quiet-. A lot of the wools were hardly of the standard of the opening sale, with seed showing on many lots. labourer, married, was found in a paddock at Springvalc with his head blown off. Deceased had been in ill health.
BAND CONTEST. WELLINGTON. February 25. The judge of the hand contest said of the final in !> grade test that it differed very much from the first selection. One suited some bands better than others. The winner had taken some risk in playing with such a quiet tone a.s there was a danger of losing quality, but the baud had been sueeessful and it was distinctly a good effort. Several bands liad excellent soloists but lapses in the general work had told against success. On the whole the playing was very good. FATAL COLLISION. lIAAIII.TON. Fchroarv 25. George Warren, a farmer, of Okoroire. while driving a lorry was hit by a train at Okoroire crossing on Wednesday night and sustained injuries from which he succumbed at Waikato Hospital.
