HOKITIKA CUSTOMS OFFICE
MINISTER DEFERS FINAL DECISION. The following letter has been received from the Minister of Customs by Mr Seddon. M.P.. relative to the proposed closing of the Customs Office at Hokitika : " With further reference to your letter of the 18th October Inst respecting the proposal that Hokitika should be closed as a Customs port- of entry, 1 have to inform you that I have obtained information with respect to various aspects of the matter and have gone carefully into the whole question.
" As a result I have decided to accede to your request that the scttloinent of the matter should lie held over until I have had an opportunity ot visiting Hie district and looking personally into the local conditions. —- (Signed) Win. Downie Stewart. Minister of Customs.”
This intimation will he considered so far satisfactory and will afford the opportunity later of the business people who are so much concerned, being brought into personal touch with the Hon. Mr Stewart. Air Seddon was at considerable pains to put the matter before the’Hon. .Minister and it is satisfactory that the statement of the position lias been so far so well received.
