BAND CONTEST. GREY BAND’S SUCCESS. WELLINGTON. February 21. To-night, before a large concourse of people, the Greymouth Band carried oil the honours of the Hymn Test, amidst a scene of great jubilation for the West Coasters. SURF BOAT SWAMPED. AT ELLINGTON. February 22

An oil driven surf boat belonging to The coastal steamer Kautunui. was swamped when a landing was being effected at Pahnu on the East Coast on Sunday morning, but the boat's crew got ashore safely. were unable to re-launch the boat and came to Wellington by train last night. The craft was almost ashore when a breaker swamped it. A stern line was attached to an anchor about 50 fathoms seaward and the next breaker swamped the boat. Efforts were made both on Sunday and yesterday, without success, to re-launch the boat.
