SIIfCIDE EPIDEMIC

NEW YORK, February I 1

An epidemic of suicides among the young students of universities and high schools has taken place during the past eight weeks. It has shocked the nation.

This series of tragedies came to a head yesterday, when a young college man shot himself, after leaving a despondent note, and to-day when three High School students committed self murder, making a total of eleven in two months.

Several of these were members of prominent families, and were living comfortable circumstances. One left a note saving that lie was going on a glorious adventure. Another said that be believed ha would become a burden. A third wrote that lie believed lie would lose his mind. A fourth destroyed himself after amateur theatricals in the school auditorium, where ho had been received with great applause. The most affecting ease was that of the son of a noted American poet, Louis Untenneycr. This youngster killed himself shortly after being visited by his father.
