It appears that visitors to the Sounds at ’Ninas time defaced the tablet on the memorial by carving their names deeply beside llie inscription, concluding with the words inside the ornamental border " Palmerston North V-M.C.A. party. ’Xmas 1020-27.” On the wooden cross-piece of the anchor surmounting the memorial a great nuinv names have been scratched. INVERCARGILL, February l b While motoring to Colne on Sunday morning, a car driven by Airs Bruce Ireland became unmanageable in loose gravel and capsized. Aliss Phyllis Fleming, aged 20. was killed instantly, her head being crushed hv the hack seat, where her father. If. T. Fleming, a well known flour miller, of Gore, was also severely crushed, till the ribs on one side being broken and his condition is serious. Airs Ireland suffered cuts and shock, hut was able to proceed home. NIAGARA PASSENGERS. AUCKLAND. February If. The Governor of South Australia, Sir Turn Bridges, was a passenger by the Niagara to-day. lie expects to spend a month here entirely on a holiday. He is u guest at Government House and intends to participate in sea fishing in the Bay of Islands. He will possibly vist Rotorua. Other through passengers include the Commonwealth industrial mission, who will visit the principal towns of United States to study the industrial conditions. NARROW ESCAPES. DUNEDIN, Feh. 14. There were two narrow escapes front drowning at St. Clair beach yesterday. Tho life saving team wa.s having a practice run when tho “Patient” took cramp and drifted some distance out to sea. Two reels were quickly brought into play and after a hard struggle he was brought ashore where ho recovered. Immediately after an alarm was tigaiti raised and it soon became obvious that this cas wa.s mi urgent one, as the drowning person was drifting rapidly out with tho tide. McLean, a High School hoy, junior member of the life saving team quickly went to his assistance and reached the mini, keeping him afloat until the senior life saving team had manned a
reel. By this time the man was nearly unconscious. After a quick pull in. resuscitation was resorted to and medical assistance restored conscious, ness.
BURGLARS ESCAPE. AUCKLAND, Feh. 14. Early on Sunday morning Constable Bunting discovered two men in a right-of-way attempting to break open a door in the shop of Lees Bros., ddipers. Kara.ngahape Road. Both men advanced on the, constable armed with a piece of wood. He held his baton in readiness to meet the attack. Both leapt at the constable hitting him with the pieces of wood, one piece giving him a glancing blow on the hdul and shoulder. His head was protected front serious injury by his helmet. Both men then hurled the pieces of wood at tho constable and escaped. Tho constable’s injuries are not serious but he will he off duty for a tew days. A CHINESE DEN. WANGANUI. February 1 I. Willie Gee. a Chinaman, for having opium in a form suitable for smoking was lined I'dO hv Magistrate Harton, i this morning. When detectives visited the premises last evening they Jonnd women’s shoes and clothing and later arrested Gladys Smith and Lily Rvan on a charge of having no lawful means of support. Both are young married women who have been in the habit of coming to AYnngatiui occasionally and frequenting Chinese premises. Ryan was smtenred to a month s imprisonment and Smith, who was more or less under the influence of the other, woniiin, was remanded until Thursday. A EIRE. AUCKLAND, February 14. An unoccupied house on Pepil Road. Alclford, was destroyed by tire tit 1 a.m. on Sunday. Owned by R. E. Tayior and insured for CI OO and contents for £l5O. FOUND DEAD. STRATFORD. February 14. A farmer at Eoko, named Carl A Zurelief, was found dead this morning with his head almost blown off and a shotgun beside the body with a string attached to the trigger, indicating suicide.
