Mjss Alonerieff’s engagement is the cause of a remarkable dispute between the. management and Aldile Pecliy, the star of the Budapest Royal Opera, who appeared in her part in the provinces, and is expected in the same role iu West End. Aldile Pecliy was told that Aliss Aloiiericff was replacing her because Miss Poehy’s knowledge of English was insufficient. To this Aliss Peeliv, who is abed, said excitedly . “ I will play or 1 will die. I have worked all night to learn English, ’flic British public does not know me, but oil the Continent I am somebody. I will not be treated like a chorus girl. I gave* up oportunilies in i\ euua. Budapest and Berlin to come to London. In Alaiicliester they stood up and cheered me. .1 am tbe show. BRITISH COAL STILT. Till', BEST. LONDON, I'Llb. 10. World markets have been recaptured bv British industry with astounding rapidity since the end of the con strike. Office figures to-day show that five and a quarter million tons of coal were raised from the coal mines the last week of January. This is a i>iostrike output. Practically the e " export trade of 'a year ago ha.s been recaptured, l.nd the exports are non back to million tons weekly. fee h as been the recovery m this icspu.t Hjhat it is equal to that of the P ,,s war year of 1925, which was not only reached, but the peak year of L)-3 very likely to ho equalled. BRITISH FINANCES. LONDON, Feb. 11. In the House of Commons, Mr Churchill (Chancellor of tin- KxiLeqner) announced that £10.).i8->.O. worth of bonds have been converted to the new 4 per cent, consolidated loan .[’he total amount of now stock creator 5s £133.000,0001. The cash proceeds are £09.105,090. The annual interest on the new. stock is estimated to show a saving of £192,000 yearly, compar.d with the old securities. To the House of Commons, Mr Churchill announced that the hotting tax had yielded £548.000 to the cm. „f Januarv, and ho estimated it would 1,,-ing in £1.500,000 by March 51st. He admitted it had not reached his expectations. and he did not think the Budget estimate would he realised from this part of the financial year. DIVIDENDS paid. LONDON. Feb. 10. The disastrous effect of the coal strike is seen in the result of the year’s working on several railways. The London, Midland and Scottish are only able to pay a dividend of three per cent, after transferring, over seven millions sterling from the reserve, compared with seven per cent, in 1924, and six in 1925. The Great Western transferred two million- from the reserve to permit the payment of a dividend of three per cent, compared with four and a. half per cent, in 1925. The Southern Railway transferred £832.000 in. order to pay one anti a quarter per <ent. on deferred stock, compared with three and a half per cent, in 1925. a couirr martial. LONDON. Feh. 10. A message from Casablanca, states that Kleins. a French deserter, suffering from wounds, appeared before the court martial on a stretcher, and was sentenced to death and military degradation . The Italian Saeclii. has again become prominent through France’s expulsion of a member of the Italian Air Force, Vagliassine, for alleged espionage while traversing inland waterways. Tt is alleged he received ten thousand francs through Sacclii. who received a similar amount.
