I remain, your obedient servant—Gladstone.’’ ASSISTING EM IGR ATION". LONDON. Feh. 10. The Supplementary Estimates wore submitted to the Commons for £2.158.000. The amount includes Treasury grants for £7OOO towards the York’s mission. This is apart from the amount the Admiralty is expending. There is an additional £1.70,000 for assisted grants for passages in 1920. The amount is apportioned, £90.000 to Australia. £IO,OOO to Canada and £20,000 to New, Zealand. It is explained £518,000 was originally voted and proved inadequate owing to the marked growth in the number of cligiblcs applying for passages.
TERRTFIC SNOWSTORM. TOKYO, Foil. 10. The North West Coast of Japan experienced the heaviest snow for half a century. There are two hundred dead in Niigate Prefecture. The snow is 20 feet deep. Entire houses are buried in the drifts and landslides. Regiments arc rushing to the rescue. ASSISTING- AUSTRALIA TO WTMBLEDON. LONDON. Feh. 11. The prospect of the Australian team at Wimbledon, is at present being given prominence. Mr Powell Blackmore iri the Evening Standard states: “It would appear no invitation has yet been extended to Australia, hut I suggest steps immediately he taken to bring the Australians to Wimbledon in June. The Australians suggestion that the team lie sent conditional on the English and French authorities assisting with the expense, was submitted to C'anet, President of the French Federation, who forthwith stated : ‘‘We should certainly he willing to help the Australians financially, hut the Council will first have to know the number and names of the team.’’ Jt only remains for the .English governing body to take similar action to Lrauce’s, Australia's suggestion is most- reasonable and their players’ presence at Wimbledon wouldiuec.cK.saril.v afford a great Empire Reunion.
