LOW CHURCH OPPOSES NEW

HOOK

[Australia & N.Z. Cable Association. 1

LONDON. February 8. “ The Archbishop of Canterbury’s prayer for peace is unlikely to he realised,” says the “Evening News.” “The first’ blow in the Prayer Book conflict was struck to-day, when the Church Association summoned its members to considers methods of combating the new proposals. Bev. Barron declares many clergy have threatend to leave the church if the changes arc made. “ I advised them to await the issue of our own efforts.” he said. “ AVc opposes the reservation, the use of vestments, which assumes the dead benefit thereby and that infers there is Purgatory for which there is no justification in the Scriptures. I hope there will he a big J battle at the Convocation on March 2*2. If beaten there. I will carry the fight to the Church Assembly in July and press it home when Parliament considers the hill in the. autumn. Many commoners have promised us support. Bev. Fowler (the Seeretrav) says:— “The League of Loyal Churchmen and the Protestant Alliance oppose the extempore prayer. They also think the reservation of the Sacrament is likely to lead to the adoption of the Roman practice of the adoration of the Sacrament. and possibly Romish customs like raising one's' hat when passing the Church where the Sacrament is reserved. They oppose communion vestments which are tantamount to legalising the Roman Mass. We are organising mass meetings of protest in Hvde Park.’’ The National Church League is also opposing the reservation of Sacrament meanwhile, the Anglo-Catliolics are comparatively content with their gains. They are organising a campaign to resist the attack.

NOT ROAIEWARD. BRISBANE. February 9

The Bishop of London is at present in Brisbane. He said the proposed new Prayer Book was really a restoration of the ancient liturgy. It was ridiculous to say that it was a movement towards Rome. The Evangelists ill America had used this suggested new form ever since.,they had a prayer hook.

THE PRAYER BOOK AND WOMEN LONDON, February 8.

Women generally will hail the deletion of the word “ obey ”, said Aliss Maude Uoyden, a prominent- woman preacher. Tt lifts the service to a higher plane. Civilised people throughout the world will lie in perfect accord. I regret the obsolete, meaningless custom of giving away the bride is retained.” Miss Alarie Tempest said: “As l have obeyed all my life, the deletion of the word does not affect me in the least.”

Aliss Ellen Wilkinson. Commoner, said she was surprised such an antiquated crowd of people as the Bishops should have produced such a welcome change. She felt more favourably towards them. Lord Cecil said the House ot Bishops had insufficiently considered the gravity of marriage. Rev. Chapman, of Savoy C'hapcl, said: “ The change is a good thing, hut when all is over my experience has been man obeys woman more than the reverse. I support the word ‘ share instead of 1 endow.’ because it is laughable to hear an attractive man without a bean saving ‘ endow ’ when marrying an heiress.”
