HOKITIKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
'The monthly meeting of thy above was held on .Monday evening. Present: Messrs H. Sweney (Chairman), S. J. Preston, W. H. Shannon, R. J. Redder, J. Coulsou, F. Clarke, IV. E. Richards, J. Conning (Hon. Sec). The West Coast A. and P. Association (Greymouth) wrote re closing of schools for the Show Day.—Received, no action taken. The Rector’s report showed a large increase in the attendance at the secondary classes, and an assistant teacher had been applied for. For commercial classes it was necessary to secure an instructor in shorthand and typing. The loss of Air H. 1). Smith was felt and the re-organisation of the class rooms was a result. Misses Ilavcll and Redder would proceed to college this month. The school hell hangings were under repair. Painting and repairs had been carried out. in the school during the vacation. A number of dual desks for the lower classes had been delivered. One scholar (Miss .M. Irwin) had matriculated. and five had secured junior national scholarships and four Public Service Examination. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Redder, that the j I igh School Board of Governors lie approached with a view to obtaining assistance for the payment of an instructor in the commercial classes. Mr Pcdder (on behalf of Mr Richards and himself) reported having visited the school and found very little needed attention. The long grass and rushes required mowing. It was also resolved to fence off tho hoys’ ground. I Mr Conning reported on tho annual excursion which was a great success. It was resolved to forward lot- I ter.s of thanks to those who organised the commissariat at Rapahoe. Messrs Preston and Coulsou were appointed visitors for the ensuing J month.
