KUMARA WATER RACE

PRIVATE CONTROL OPPOSED. (Grey “Star.”) Information in tho possession of the Grey Power Board apparently indicates that there is a prospect of the Kumara water race coming under the control of a private syndicate. A statement to that effect was made yesterday hy the Chairman of the Board (Mr J. AY. Greenslade). Tho Chairman pointed out that the Grey Board stood aside during the negotiations for tho purchase of the water race between the "Westland Bower Board and the Minister of Mines (Hon. G. ,T. Anderson), on the understanding that, if tho Westland Board did not desire to purchase the water race, tho Grey. Board was to be given tho first chance to do so. Tt was announced recently that the Westland Board had agreed to purchase the water race, hut the latest information to reach the Greymouth Board had revived doubt as to the real position.

The Chairman despatched tlio _ following telegram to-day to the Minister of Mines:—“Understand Kumara Water Race being developed by private company under license to supply dis trict. If so, emphatically protest, as your assurances were definitely given to the effect that in tho event of Westlaud Power Board not developing the race due consideration would be given our claim for investigation.”
