Amid scenes of bitter anger and recrimination, tho Liquor Amendment Bill was read the third time in the New South AVale.s Assembly, when the Chief Secretary, Air Lazjdriiii, moved tho closure of tho debate.
Air Lane (a Nationalist) advanced to the table and shouted at Mr Lazzarini “How much are you getting out of it. Your hands are rod with it—the lot of you!” -v Air Lazzarini retorted: “You’re a
dirty low-minded scoundrel!” Tho gag was eventually carried by 39 votes to 37.
Tho Bill was then passed the third reading by IS of a majority —4s io 27 amid an indescribable tumult. The climax came when, after. the members had left their seats for the division, Air Lang remained at the table, shouting indignantly at the Government. Ho said; “Tho liquor trade has never got anything it hasn’t paid for Your hands are red with their money!”
Mr Lazzarini then ran across the floor of the chamber, and aimed ia wild swing at Air Lane, hitting him on tho nose. Air Lane made no attempt to defend himself or retaliate. Another scene of wild disorder followed when Air Arkins and Air Ness, both ol whom are Prohibitionists, rushed ‘at Air Lazznrini, but they were held back by friends and Afr Lazzarini was then dragged back by supporters. Meantime Air Speaker was hammering on bis desk, calling for order. He ordered the Scrgehmt-at-Arms to icmove Mr Lane and Mr Lazzarini. The Sergeant removed Mr Lane. Mr Laz.zarini walked out. Eventually order was restored and both members lister re-entered and apologised to the Speaker. Lane states Lazzarini’s blow did not reach bis nose, but glanced off Lancs band as he instinctively raised it in a warning gesture.
