THE NORTHUMBERLAND
[by TEL EG RAP II —PEII PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
GISBORNE, Feb. 3
The return of the Northumberland at 1.40 p.m. created some surprise. In response to a wireless message the Harbourmaster went out and took the ship hack to its former moorings off AVaikanae Beach. A diver went down and found the outer mats were coming away from the sheepskin, mat. Tlie fire brigade’s trailer pump which shifts 300 gallons per minute, was sent for, and it. substantially reduced the water in No. 2 hold. It is understood that the mats will have to he replaced and with other work necessary for the trip to Auckland, it will mean, that the Nort"'berlnnd will stay here for about a wcck. GISBORNE, February 4. As a result of the movement of tho vessel in the sea way many of the manilla ropes attaching the collision mats to the Northumberland carried away, necessitating new patches being affixed to the vessel before she again resumes her journey. In the wash of the sea Ilie old mats were badly damaged. The position of the vessel shows little alteration to-day, the hows being no deeper than when the steamer left the roadstead on Wednesday evening. No anxiety for the safety of tlie vessel is entertained.
