The swarm of bees which came to rest on Friday afternoon in a bowser pump outside Mr Go H. Mobberlcy s garage in Kingsland, Auckland, was on Monday still in possession of the pump, and the bees evidently intend to establish headquarters there. They are peaceful enough tenants, for they keep inside at night, and. although they ily idx)lit in the day-time, they do not interfere with anyone working the pump. As the visitors have failed to go of their own accord. Mr Mobberlcy intends to call in the services of an expert to evict them.
As the outcome of the conference held at Christchurch on Wednesday morning between representatives of the Canterbury Jockey Club and the New Brighton Trotting Club, presided over bv Mr C. P. Agar, chairman of the Royal Reception Committee, the race meeting which now will he included in the official programme of entertainments for the Duke and Duchess of York will be that of the New Brighton Club. This will he the recommendation of the Reception Committee to the Department of Internal Affairs.
A motor collision occurred at Runnngu about I p.m. oil Wednesday. A Studcbaker ear, driven by Mr Lambert of Waltham, Christchurch, was proceeding along McGowan Street, and, on reaching the Duncan Street intersection, collided with a motor lorry owned by the Runanga Co-operative Society, driven by Air L. Jackson. Ihe lamp and mudguard of the ear. and the side of the lorry were damaged, hut no one was injured. It is stated that the mishap was accidental, and was partly caused hv the narrow roads and lack of visabi 1 ity at the intersection.
Swans' eggs and the regulations governing the taking of them were rcfered to in the Lower Court at Christchurch on Wednesday morning by Milt. Twynehain, solicitor. “It is now a general opinion,” he said, “that some radical alteration should lie made in the law governing the taking, and receiving of swans eggs .... The Acclimatisation Society lias an absolute monopoly over them. They are building no quite a little business, collecting the eggs and selling, them to pastry cooks for cakes and such things. Tile lakes around about are black with swans. Very few people eat the eggs and the consequence is that the swans arc increasing in numbers.”
He was an American, ami lie spoke English with a marked but pleasant American accent. He gestured with his hands, and, when he ablv defended himself in the Lower Court at Christchurch on a charge of crossing a. railway line in. a motor-car when a train was approaching, he leaned against the dock and said: “Your .Honour, I was over those rails and 50 yards beyond before that train swept over iny tracks ! I was only going at 20 to 25 miles an hour. 1 was with my wife, and believe me. we didn’t even get a kick out of it!” The Justice of the Peace smiled. ‘‘But the enginedriver says lie missed you by inches.” they reminded him. “Inches!” he echoed. “AVhy, if it’d only been inches I sure would have got a thrill. But I didn’t even got that!” He was fined 20s. however.
The Hokitika district schools excursion to Point Elizabeth yesterday prov.ed a. decided success and enjoyable holiday. About l-I'JO took part in‘the two trains provided. The iirst train ran into rain at Greymouth and there was a smart shower shortly after arrival at Rnpahoe, hut the clouds quickly cleared and the rest of the day was beautifully fine. Point iKlizaheih proved an excellent location and the general arrangements for the supply of hot water etc. being excellent, the holiday makers had nothing to do hut enjov themselves. A sporting proramnie was run. off and excited much interest. The Municipal Band accompanied the excursion and enlivened the general proceedings. The wayside train which went on to Boss passed throned, Hokitika at 7,30 and the second train v ith the Hokitika, and district passengers reached town a few minutes before 8 o’clock. All appeared to have had an enjoyable outing.

An increase in the Court costs to he paid by persons convicted of an offence took place on February Ist. in accordance with a gazette notice. The fee for an information or complaint will he raised from os to 7s and for a hearing or re-liearing from 2s to 3s. Court costs will therefore normally he 10s instead of 7s, as in the past. In addition the fee for a warrant will he increased from 3s to ss. and for the service of a summons from 2s to 3s. In consequence of frequent complaints as to the cost of service of
criminal summonses on persons living in the country, statutory provision has also been made for me service by registered letters of summonses upon informations for matters determinable summarily. The fee where service is effected l>y registered letter has been fixed at 2s. If the person to he served resides at such a distance that the mileage if service were effected by a constable would exceed two shillings, service will lie in future be effected bv registered letter.

At St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church the Quarterly Communion Service will lie held on Sunday morning. There will be a pre-Comnninion Service tonight at 8 o’clock.
A final reminder is given of the Swimming Carnival to lie held at the Municipal Baths this evening. A varied programme has been arranged and should meet with hearty approval. As the fust- race on the programme will lie the Girls’ Handicap (under fifteen years of age) competitors are reminded to he on their marks punctually at 7.30 p.m.
The many friends of Mr Herbert P. Littlewood will regret to hear of his death, which took place ta the Westlad Ilospitl this morning after an illness extending over some time. Deceased was G2 years of age. Recently he took charge of the hotel at Stafford, but soon after was taken ill. He had previously been in charge of the hotel at Lake Mahinapua. A widow and one daughter are left to mourn their loss.
